I'm looking at number 9 on the unit three review and I don't really know what to do. How should I start to look at this?

Also,on number 7 of the same unit, i didn't know how to factor out the m, so what did was:

6mn-4m=5n
- - - divide by m
m m m
------------
6n-4=5n/m
- - - divide by n
n n n
------------
6-4n+5m
- - - divide by 5
5 5 5
-------------
6/5 -4/5n=m

I feel like I did that completely wrong. Help!

Well, first (deep breath) remember that we are solving for m, so we want to isolate m.

We could divide by m(and then n) but that doesn't seem to help.

So... what other tools do we have in our Algebra toolkit. Hmmm... well that's binomial on the left side... can we factor it?

Sure thing, let's factor out (i.e. isoloate) the m.

We get:
m(6n-4)=5n

(aka m times blob)

divide both sides by blob

m = 5n/(6n-4)

Looks like we hit our target (m=).

Too easy, huh?

Ok, i feel kinda stupid asking this...but....

In a problem with absolute value brackets, how do you figure out whether the "V" faces up or down without graphing?

Definitely NOT a stupid question.

Very much similar to a quadratic, the sign of the leading coefficient determines the v-up or v-down graph.

Try a few and see.

You can even use the graphing calculator, although it is a special function.

To graph y=|x-2| ; type abs(x-2)

For y=-|x| ; type -(abs(x))
For y=-|x-2| ; type -(abs(x-2))

GOOD QUESTION!!
